IQNA – The Holy Quran refers to Jews as a people who are the most greedy for the worldly life and are described as even more greedy than the Mushrikeen (polytheists).

Holy Quran

It should be noted that the Holy Quran has two stances on Jews. One is about those Jewish people who believe in the one God and the Resurrection Day and do good deeds and they are among the “People of the Book”.

Another group are those Jews who do not believe in God and the Resurrection and who plot against Islam. In fact, these are the Jews mentioned in the verses that talk about the negative characteristics of the Jewish people.

The second group of Jews were very greedy while many prophets had been sent to them and they could use their teachings and advice to be saved from going astray.

Describing this group of Jews, the Holy Quran says: “However, you will find them the greediest of all men, even more than the pagans, for life. They would each gladly live for a thousand years, but such a long life would not save them from the torment. God sees what they do.” (Verse 96 of Surah Al-Baqarah)

According to this verse, these Jews are the greediest people for the worldly life as they think long life may prevent divine punishment.

One of the reasons for such a level of greed among this group of Jews may be their lack of true belief in the hereafter. The Quran says: “Believers, do not establish friendship with the people who have become subject to the wrath of God. They do not have any hope in the life to come, just as the disbelievers have no hope in those who are in their graves.” (Verse 13 of Surah Al-Mumtahina)

Although the People of the Book (Christians and Jews) believe in the Resurrection Day, this second group of Jews are subject to the wrath of God and have no hope in rewards in the hereafter. That is why their situation is no different from that of unbelievers.

This verse reminds believers of the everlasting damnation of the second group of Jews, so that they will avoid friendship and interaction with them.
